This week, national news sources say that former Miss USA Rima Fakih received her sentence for driving under the influence (DUI). A judge decided to give Fakih six months of probation, $600 in fines, and twenty hours of mandatory community service for drunk driving. The former beauty queen must also attend alcohol safety and impact classes as part of her sentence. Just last month, 26-year-old Fakih pleaded no contest to her DUI charges after being arrested in the state of Michigan.

In December 2011, Fakih was placed under arrest after a police officer saw her changing lanes without signaling and speeding. The officer pulled her over and she took a breath test. Her results were 0.12% - well above the state's legal limit of 0.08%. As you can see, even a first-time DUI offense can result in serious legal penalties. For this reason, if you've been charged with driving under the influence, enlist the help of a Michigan criminal defense lawyer from our office by

A new law recently enacted in Michigan has kept police busy over the past month. The "Super Drunk" law states that drivers with a blood-alcohol content level over 0.17% will face increased charges. During a three-week period this month, a total of 79 drivers were charged under the new law. Law enforcement agencies across the state conducted a three-week crackdown on drunk drivers this month. The combined efforts of 165 agencies in 26 counties led to increased DUI arrests. While searching for drunk drivers, police officers were able to target people committing other traffic violations as well.

The crackdown period, dubbed "Over the Limit. Under Arrest." was a three-week effort that took place from March 13th to April 2nd. A total of 4,000 arrests or citations were given out during 8,083 traffic stops. While the initiative usually ends after St. Patrick's Day, it was extended to coincide with spring break for area colleges. Have you been arrested for

Police were able to arrest one man on multiple charges last week in the state of Michigan. What started out as a theft call led to
drug possession charges as well say news sources. Officers in Flint were called to the scene of an abandoned house where three men had been observed taking items from the property. When police arrived at the scene, the three men took off, but officers were able to catch up with one of them. In addition to having scrap metal in his possession, the 44-year-old man also had crack cocaine and a synthetic drug on his body.

This represented just one of several arrests made over the past two weeks for possession of crack cocaine. One suspect, a 20-year-old man, was detained when he tried to sell crack to a police officer. A drug crime second suspect fled from his car during a routine traffic stop and tried to toss out a bag of cocaine as he ran away from officers.

A Canadian man was arrested and placed into the back of a patrol car. It is clear that he had been drinking. As the man was being transported to the police station, he began singing Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody." The man's entire performance was caught on the patrol car's video and unfortunately for this man, it is now on You Tube for the world to see. While we do not know why this man was arrested, it seems likely that alcohol was a factor.

A common alcohol-related crime is OWI, operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol. A

OWI conviction can have numerous negative consequences. Of course, imprisonment is one of the most serious consequences. However, even losing your driver's license for an extended period of time can cause economic hardship and a great deal of stress. Relying upon friends, family members, and public transportation to get to and from work or school is not only a hassle, but you may not be able to get where you need to go on time. You may also face fines, community service and probation for a conviction. Loss of employment is yet another potential side effect.

You may have heard, Bobby Brown, Whitney Houston's ex-husband, is in trouble again. It is being reported that he was pulled over Monday for talking on a cell phone without using a hands-free device. While he was stopped, the officer "suspected" he was impaired. It is not being reported what caused the officer to suspect he was intoxicated however, at least one field sobriety test was administered. The officer claims Mr. Brown failed a sobriety test and arrested him on suspicion of DUI. Again, it was not reported exactly what sobriety tests were offered, which one he failed, and there was no mention of whether he was ever given a PBT, a preliminary breath test. The singer was released later that afternoon.

A young man faces multiple criminal charges after causing an accident in Ypsilanti last week. Officers say that the he not only caused a collision, but was found to be in possession of a handgun. According to the police report, 24-year-old D.P. was driving early Sunday morning when he rear-ended another vehicle. He attempted to drive away from the scene of the car accident but was pulled over about a block away. After police administered several field sobriety tests, which he failed, they searched his vehicle. It was then that they discovered the .22-caliber handgun for which he did not have a permit.

Since the suspect's BAC was over .017, he was charged under Michigan's "Super Drunk" law. He was also charged with failing to stop at an accident, driving while intoxicated, carrying a concealed weapon and being in possession of a firearm while intoxicated. felony charges for
embezzlement in Wayne County, Michigan. The charge was for
embezzlement by agent, servant or trustee, where the money or personal property embezzled was allegedly valued from $1,000 or more but less than $20,000.

The punishment for the above offense would have been up to 5 years in prison or a fine of not more than $10,000 or 3 times the value of the money or property embezzled, whichever is greater, or both imprisonment and a fine.
Despite overwhelming evidence implicating their client, the attorneys from Freedman & Freedman were successful in negotiating with the state prosecutor a complete dismissal of the charge against their client and only a nominal restitution to the alleged victim in the case. This was a major success for the client who was able to avoid thousands of dollars in monetary fines and imprisonment.

The state of Michigan has some of the harshest laws when it comes to embezzlement. On average, there are more than 3,900 reported embezzlement cases each year in the state of Michigan. In a recent embezzlement case, a bank employee was sentenced by a judge to 33 months in prison and was ordered to pay more than $641,000 in restitution.

When police investigated the basement, they found a bed surrounded by whips and chains.

The location of the bizarre room was obtained from a man that claims to have helped kill the victim. He also claims that the victim's husband paid him to help kill his wife. At this time, the claims have neither been substantiated nor repudiated. If someone you love has recently been charged with murder, you need to seek legal counsel immediately. Don't hesitate to contact Freedman & Freedman so you can enlist the advise and services of an experienced

Imagine, you go to a certain area in the City of
 Detroit
for work purposes or for some other non-criminal purpose. The police stop you and ask what you are doing there. When you explain your legitimate purpose for being in the area, the police are skeptical. You are issued a ticket for loitering in a place known for prostitution and narcotics. This ticket is a
misdemeanor, punishable by up to 93 days in jail and a $1000.00 fine.

According to WXYZ Channel 7 news, this seems to be a growing trend. They report that 2 dozen people claim to have been wrongfully issued misdemeanor tickets in a similar scenario. In light of the nature of the tickets, countless others could be simply paying the tickets because they are too embarrassed to appear in court. Don’t let this happen to you.

Not one but two men in Midland were arrested for suspicion of committing sex crimes against minors. Police in Michigan have been working hard to track down criminal offenders that have been accused of violating the rights of children. One of the men, 42-year-old D.W.S., was charged with felony second-degree sexual assault on a child. Police were alerted of his actions by a concerned aunt who said her niece told her that she was a victim of sexual abuse.

The second suspect, C.E.L., 40, was charged felony second-degree indecency with a child by sexual contact. He reportedly fondled a 16-year-old female family member and he later admitted to having touched her indecently. Sex crimes are no laughing matter as a convictions for offenses of this nature may not only lead to jail time, but also lifetime sex offender registration. Therefore, if you are facing sex crime charges, contact Freedman & Freedman today to get immediate help from an experienced

assault and batteryIt is being reported that a 14-year-old boy from Flint was beaten by his classmates last Friday. The attackers were 15, 16 and 17-years old. The attack was videotaped and the boys posted the video on Facebook. Not surprising, the Genesee County Prosecutor is pressing charges for
unarmed robbery against the three boys and is intending to use the Facebook video as evidence.

Assault and
battery, although often used interchangeably or grouped together, are actually two separate criminal offenses. Assault is defined as the attempt or threat of bodily injury or violence to another person. Battery is the actual act of violence – the striking, hitting or touching of another person against their will.

A simple assault and battery case may be charged as a
misdemeanor in Michigan. The offender would face, as maximum penalties, up to 1 year in county jail. However, when a deadly weapon is used, the potential penalties may escalate.

At Freedman & Freedman, we understand just how important a
