Drunken Driver Arrested For Third OWI After Driving Wrong Way On Hall Road May Face Deportation
A 35-year-old illegal immigrant who lives in Troy has been charged with drunken driving after he was seen by a police sergeant driving the wrong way on Hall Road with his wife and one-year-old child in the car, police said.
The arrest of Juan Carlos Banos-Chavez was the third time he has been charged by police with drunken driving. When stopped at 3:15 a.m. Monday on Hall and Grant Park roads, between the Christopher Columbus Freeway and Van Dyke Avenue, Banos-Chavez allegedly told Utica police Sgt. Sean Coady he was coming from Oakland County and was headed home.
"Apparently he missed it (the I-75 exit to his residence in Troy)," Utica Detective Sgt. David Faber said.
He was charged with operating a vehicle for the third time under the influence of liquor, a 5-year felony, and operating a vehicle while intoxicated with a passenger less than 16 years old in the vehicle.
Faber said police got several calls from motorists who saw the suspect's 1993 Jeep Cherokee going eastbound in the westbound lanes of Hall Road. When tested, Banos-Chavez had .12 percent alcohol in his blood, Faber said.
Police said if Banos-Chavez posts bond, he will be turned over to U.S. immigration officials for possible deportation back to Mexico.
