Laptop Theft Ring Leads to Embezzlement Charges

This week, the father of a Michigan State University athlete, Donald Lewis Sims Jr., pled guilty to one count of embezzlement from the college.  Sims was charged for being involved in a laptop theft ring in the city of Detroit.

According to police, Sims was charged with four counts of embezzlement. He was accused of using U-M money to purchase $74,000 worth of laptop computers and equipment and for making $14,000 worth of fraudulent purchases.

The spokeswoman for U-M police, Diane Brown, said that Sims is expected to be sentenced on December 2nd and that three of the embezzlement charges will be dropped at that time.

Sims pled guilty to one count of embezzlement and stands accused of stealing $50,000 to $100,000.  His sole offense carries a sentence of 15 years and is classified as a felony. He is the former business administrator for the college's AfroAmerican and African studies centers.
