Violent Crime Rate in Detroit Increases According to FBI

According to statistics released by the FBI, the violent crime rate in the city of Detroit has increased despite the fact that nationwide, violent crimes have decreased.

The violent crime rate, which measures offenses like murder, rape, aggravated assault and robbery rose by over 2% compared to 2008.  The murder rate also climbed to 40 per 100,000 compared to last year's rate of 34 per 100,000.

The FBI reports that despite the increase in violent crime, property crimes in the city dropped by 5%.  Throughout the nation, property crimes have dropped by 4.6% and violent crimes have decreased by 5.3%.

Statistics show that the most dramatic increases in violent offenses occurred in Warren, Eastpointe, Livonia and Dearborn Heights.   Decreases occurred in Farmington Hills, Southfield, Troy and Clinton Township.

In Detroit, final statistics for 2009 report that there were 365 murders in the city.  In 2008, the number was 306, but these statistics have been challenged.
