Holiday Season Is Busy Time For Shoplifters
The holiday season has been touted as the one of the busiest times for shoplifters. The crime of retail fraud can take many forms. The most obvious is someone picking up an item, storing it in a purse or pocket and simply leaving the store. Other forms of retail fraud include putting on an article of clothing in a dressing room and walking out with it as well as taking a new item off the shelf and returning it for full price. Often, shoplifters form networks and steel items for each other. An article in The Saginaw News details the Shoplifter Task Force created by the Saginaw Township Police Department. The task force works with local retailers to educate about loss prevention and throughout the year, they conduct several shoplifting "blitzes" where they devote police personnel to retailers for one or two days with the goal being to arrest as many shoplifters as possible. Inspired by Saginaw County's success, other counties are also creating their own taskforces to address the shoplifting problem.
