Man Charged After Piece Of An Ear Is Bitten Off In Plymouth Bar Fight

A Canadian man bit off part of a Canton man's ear at a Plymouth bar during the weekend, Plymouth police said.

The 54-year-old man whose ear was injured was taken to St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Ypsilanti but Doctors apparently were unable to reattach the piece of his upper left ear.

John Andrews, 48, of Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario was reportedly charged with assault with intent to maim, a 10-year felony, and being a habitual offender. He was arraigned Sunday in 34th District Court in Romulus, where bail was set at $15,000. Andrews' preliminary exam is set for Feb. 11 in 35th District Court in Plymouth.

The incident reportedly started as an argument. The Canton man, whom police did not name, was sitting with friends at Sean O'Callaghan's in Plymouth Saturday night when Andrews and his party sat down at a table nearby.

Andrews' group allegedly began throwing napkins, coasters and lemon peels at the other group, prompting the Canton man to ask Andrews to calm down. Andrews told the man several times, "You do not want to mess with me," before he leaned in and bit the man's ear. He offered no explanation for his actions and officers determined that Andrews' group appeared to be highly intoxicated.
