Penalties for Stalking in Michigan
Most Michigan stalking offenses are charged as misdemeanors, with maximum penalties of up to 1 year in prison and fines of up to $1,000. However, in certain circumstances a defendant may face felony charges and increased penalties. Stalking a victim under the age of 18, for example, is a felony punishable by up to 5 years in prison and fines of up to $10,000. The court may also impose counseling and anger management, as well as a restraining order that will prohibit any further contact with the victim. A restraining order may also prohibit the alleged stalker from coming within a certain distance of the victim, the victim’s home and the victim’s place of employment.
All the penalties mentioned above may have lasting consequences on a person’s reputation, ability to obtain and keep employment, and personal relationships. A defendant’s life may never be the same after being convicted of stalking.
